Cabinet orders NamPower to halt power suspensions

Jul 02, 2023

The Cabinet has directed NamPower to stop its plan to cut power to defaulting regional electricity distributors, local authorities, and regional councils.

On Monday, several towns in the Hardap and //Kharas regions, as well as in the seven northern regions supplied by Nored, went without electricity from 17h00 to 20h30.

This was the first stage of NamPower's plans to cut power to push defaulters, who owe the power utility over N$1 billion, to pay up.Finance and public enterprises minister Iipumbu Shiimi informed the Cabinet about the worsening debt situation of these entities. This led to a directive for NamPower to postpone the power suspensions.

The decision was communicated to NamPower board chairperson Daniel Motinga, in a letter from Shiimi.

"Accordingly, Cabinet has issued a directive for NamPower to put on hold the planned power suspensions pending further consultations between the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, and local authorities," said Shiimi.

Yes, this is irrational action must be nipped in the bud with immediate effect? What do you think about the citizens who are loyally paying the bills on time from their hard-earned money?
